classes
Lighting and Portraiture Classes: I am available for small group classes or independent study for individuals who want to learn more about lighting and portraiture. My fee is $100/hour which may be split with others if you find friends to join you (up to a total of four per class.) I also offer creative assignments and critiques for those who want to take their skills to a higher level. Please email me at Rosanne@rosanneolson.com
Rosanne's Teaching: I am passionate about teaching and love to help people find their creative vision. In 2002 I co-founded Art Chix, a women's art group that has led to many creative works by the members of the group. I teach small lighting, creativity and portrait workshops in my studio, as well as lighting and portraiture classes at venues such as Photo Center Northwest in Seattle and Santa Fe Workshops. I also give lectures at high schools, colleges and universities and teach lighting and portraiture at various photographic conferences and workshops including, WPPI in Las Vegas and the PDN Photo Expo in New York. I authored a book about lighting called the ABCs of Beautiful Light (Amherst Media), The Art of the Portrait (Amherst Media) and This is Who I Am, a book about women and body image.
Here is an article about my teaching philosophy.
Quotes from students:
"Rosanne Olson is an absolute master - one of the best teachers and most creative people know. I had the luxury of studying under her for almost 2 years...1st as student and then a teaching assistant. Prior to that, I just took cute pics of animals...Rosanne helped me see and FEEL light which is so important in storytelling and imagery."––Carol Whitfield
"This was my first workshop and you have inspired me to keep working on improving my skills with all the techniques and ideas you shared with us during the workshop."––Eduardo Martineze
"Some years ago I took an Advanced Lighting class with Rosanne Olson. By far one of the most amazing and favorite courses I have taken. Rosanne did not stand in front of the class and teach, instead it was hands on and demanding. No passive learning here.––Susan Cole
"I so love understanding light more!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"––Karen Hibler
"I have been photographing with natural light for 20 years, however am a newbie to the world of studio lighting, strobes and didn't know much about my speedlite. I learned far more about light in these 5 weeks than my past 20 years of self-study."––Kenna Klosterman
"I loved the workshop you did for the Society of Photographic Educators/NW conference. I immediately incorporated several ideas into my next lighting demonstration. Thanks again." ––Janet Neuhauser
